Case Studies

Project: Northern York County School District High School

Project Scope & Size:

  • Networked lighting controls in corridors, lobbies, stairwells, and restrooms
  • Control strategy incorporated occupancy and daylight sensors as well smart time scheduling
  • Site lighting networked control via relay panel and photo sensor
  • System expandable to additional areas and district buildings from one central server
  • Multiple PC access points for control and monitoring

Value Statement: Encelium is the innovative lighting control technology for smart buildings. The Energy Management System (EMS) is a software-based, integrated lighting control and energy management system that can dynamically respond to the changing needs and environment of a building. Encelium is an open source, non-proprietary control system compatible with third-party sensors or ballasts. The EMS utilizes six energy strategies simultaneously to achieve maximum energy savings. Through the user-friendly graphic interface, building operators can easily control, monitor, and generate various energy consumption reports. The EMS integrates to most building automation systems for a single point of control and can be accessed via the Web. NRG Controls is an authorized Encelium Integrator.

Project: Spring Grove School District Intermediate School

Project Scope & Size:

  • Networked lighting controls in three classrooms
  • Control strategy incorporated dimming, occupancy/vacancy, daylight sensors, and personal task tuning control
  • Features two zones of control in addition to the individual control of fixtures near white board
  • Each teacher has access to his/her classroom lighting controls via their PC
  • System expandable to additional areas and buildings from one central server

Project: Lancaster County Forensic Center

Project Scope & Size:

  • Networked lighting controls throughout the building
  • Control strategy incorporated occupancy sensors and smart time scheduling to accommodate 24/7 access
  • Site lighting networked control via relay panel and photo sensor
  • System expandable to other county buildings from one central server

Project: Millersville University

Project Scope & Size:

For more than 15 years, NRG Controls has provided all of the University’s building automation needs. Almost every building on campus is managed by an NRG-engineered controls system. As the University continues to grow and expand and make renovations, NRG will continue to partner with the Facilities Department to ensure continuity of the hardware and software of the BAS. In addition, Millersville University requires strict sequences of operations for all the campus’ HVAC equipment to ensure that no energy is wasted while maintaining optimal space conditions for the education mission.

Value Statement: Standardization of NRG Controls’ Building Automation Systems in recent years has reduced Millersville’s training costs, expedited response time when a service request is submitted, and has helped Millersville University contain and reduce operating costs, which in turn has helped to offset the rising cost of education.

Project: Giant Center

Project Scope & Size:

NRG Controls designed and implemented a complete Web-based Building Automation/Energy Management System. The project included full BacNet integrations to both the Trane chillers as well as a BacNet integration with the Delta Control system for the facility’s ice making equipment. In addition, NRG provided both smoke evacuation and purge strategies to support the various events that the Giant Center hosts throughout the year.

Value Statement: NRG Controls recognizes the potential huge loss in revenue to Hershey Entertainment if the conditioned space or ice systems were to malfunction due to a loss of the Building Automation System. To date, this has never been the case.

Project: Milton Hershey School District

Project Scope & Size:

More than 250 buildings integrated into one building automation system that is accessible from the Web. Automation includes HVAC, street lighting control, greenhouse and underground aqua-fir monitoring and control.

Value Statement: In a period of two years, NRG Controls saved the Milton Hershey School District more than $1 million in energy costs.
